Where do Taskmaster Clubs come from?

Taskmaster Education is an organisation that uses the format of the television show to create Taskmaster Clubs, which aim to develop important life skills of creativity, teamwork, problem solving, and more. Taskmaster Clubs started life as after school clubs for young people, but can now be found at English Heritage sites, on NHS wards, at live festivals, and, most recently, in services for adults with care needs.

What is Taskmaster Care Club?

Taskmaster Care Club is a fun activity designed for people living in or attending adult social care settings, such as care homes or day centres. We realise that language is an important consideration in this sector and therefore we do not use the word ‘Care’ in the videos, posters or certificates for those participating. It is simply Taskmaster Club.

How does Taskmaster Club work?

Before the session you print the poster, pick your tasks, review the session plan and gather any resources, check the video will display on a screen everyone can see, and print a scorecard. During the session you play the introduction video, then the task video, help anyone who needs support, give everyone a set time, then invite each person to share what they did and score it from 1 to 5. What are prize tasks, and how are they different?

Each episode of the Taskmaster show starts with a prize task, where the comedians are asked to bring something from home to serve as a collection of prizes for the winner of that episode. Prize tasks in Taskmaster Club are similar: they involve asking participants to bring something to the session. But no one will be asked to give up any items, and participants don't necessarily need to bring their entry in — sometimes that might be very impractical, if it was an aeroplane or a butterfly.

Who can participate? Is it dementia-friendly?

We use the font OpenDyslexic in our guidance to support accessible reading, and all the videos have subtitles. In the session guides you will see alternative ways to complete each task to match people's level of ability. Dementia affects everyone in a different way, so we don't claim that every activity is dementia friendly. But we have developed additional resources and alternative ways to complete the tasks specific to those with cognitive impairment.

It's my first time. Do you have recommended first tasks?

If it's your first session then we would recommend starting with task TM0000, the tea bag task. It is simple and fun, and helps participants become familiar with the concept of the tasks. You may then wish to try a prize task. TM0002 is set by a retired Concorde pilot from the Concorde flight deck. You might want to give participants notice about a prize task in advance.

What makes a great session?

Taskmaster Care Club is designed for us all to have some fun. The tasks are silly, nonsensical, and will hopefully give everyone a bit of a laugh. The Club has a variety of tasks to suit different skillsets and personality types. Some might be logical, others artistic, or performative, or something more physical. You don't have to hold any particular skills to win. Remind people there is no wrong answer. It is designed to get everyone talking, especially in the prize task. It gives everyone the chance to speak about their backgrounds and memories. Now go and have fun.
